Hydrogen-electric propulsion system for Bonanza airframe retrofit

Stralis are currently testing their hydrogen electric propulsion system (HEPS) with two Bonanza A36 aircraft. The test program is underway and Stralis have completed a successful propellor spin using hydrogen at Brisbane International Airport in 2024, and the first hydrogen test flight is planned for Q3 2025.

Hydrogen-electric outperforms battery and fossil fuel aircraft on payload range. Competing hydrogen-electric developers use low-temperature fuel cells, which are mature but too heavy, limiting range and payload capabilities. The Stralis hydrogen-electric propulsion system uses high-temperature PEM fuel cells which are 6X lighter and have improved performance.

Stralis hydrogen-electric propulsion system for Bonanza airframe retrofit

Low maintenance cost

Estimated 60% reduction in engine maintenance costs compared to turbines.

Fuel savings

Low fuel costs compared to fuels currently used in turbine engines.

Useful payload and range

Unlike battery-electric, HEP delivers ranges suitable for commercial, regional routes.

Emission-free

Quieter, emission-free flight with zero carbon dioxide, nitric oxide or soot.
